Here at landscapenashville.com we want to let everyone in the Middle Tn Nashville area know that you should aerify your yard at least once a year. Core aerification is the preferred.
There are different ways to aerify your yard. One method involves a machine that when pulled through the yard slices lines about a couple of inches deep into the soil through the grass. This method works but for the shortest period of time because the slices soon close up after a few rainfalls. There is a method whereby solid metal rods are shoved a few inches into the soil and pushes an opening into the ground. This method also has drawbacks because you are compacting the sides of the hole apart and making a surface inside the hole that is hard or oxygen to penetrate until after a few weeks of weathering and then eventually the holes close back in anyhow and you lose the effect.
We use core aerification, through this process we pull up 2″ plugs and they get set on top of the lawn. When the process is finished you have lots of small plugs of soil laying in the yard. These disolve within a few weeks and slowly become part of the makeup of the lawn unseen. Lots of great things happen with core aerification. 1. The soil is removed from its compacted location and set on top of the grass. 2. a hole is created for this years seed or fertilizer if you are doing those at that time which makes a small warm moist microclimate for your seed to germinate in. 3. As the plug begins to dissolve back into the regular soil level your soil enjoys an uneven surface that allows air into the holes in the ground as well as around the plug that is dissolving. Micro-organisms love this because they need oxygen to survive also and many new habitats are made for these beneficial organisms.
As these organisms are living out their lives they create beneficial enzymes that the plants use on a cellular level to help roots feed on nutrients. With core aerification your soil benefits, your grass benefits, and you benefit.
