Planting a Brandywine Maple should be done in the Dormant Season which is when most plants are dormant for Winter. Fall is a good time because plants are beginning to go dormant. When conditions are cold trees dig in with their root systems getting established while not concentrating on leafy growth where you can see it.

I hope this helps you decide to plant one of these fantastic trees.

We seed every year in Middle Tennessee because our climate is soo extreme. An average winter gets to -10 for our zone so warm weather grasses won't work here. We get a wet time of year during Spring and sometimes we are inundated and the grass would need to tolerate that also. And lastly almost every year we go through a severe drought that kills most grasses if not watered every day.

Other reasons are that our soil is mainly clay and limestone because the area is an ancient sea bed. The lime that is dug up has fossil shells all in it. The soil the seed is growing in is the problem about 50% of the time.

Most turf grasses have problems with one or more of these things that are present for it to have to live in. Fescue to this point is what is mainly used because it tolerates allot of this fairly well. Fescue either dies in spots or goes dormant during the drought each year. So if you were a person with a Fescue yard like most are you would need to seed the bare spots again.

Seeding each year keeps Fescue thick with new plants reaching through the old.

A typical bag of fescue has 3 or 4 different kinds of Fescue. This helps if you get a fungus or other disease turf grasses get because the invader is encountering a different type of grass as it tries to spread.

I think Middle Tn is one of the hardest places to grow a lawn because of these factors. If you ask me what is the easiest solution for most people to have a great lawn. I'd say start with a soil test and save years of experimentation.
First eliminate the soil problems because there is 1/2 of the reasons most lawns fail right there. We do soil tests currently for $100 -- the sample is sent off to a lab. The results are analyzed and a report is made. Thirdly the report is broken down into actual products the homeowner can use to bring the soil into proper balance.

I have a page on turfgrasses we use here in Middle Tn here is a link http://www.landscapenashville.com/grass_nashville.html

I you cant get your hands on any compost sand is also great. Sand will give you good drainage and allow the water to get to the roots of the grass easily.

Why do you have to seed every year?
